As we mentioned in our previous post, the heat wave that hit the Indianapolis area produced 34 days of 90+ degrees so far this summer, smashing the 1936 record of 23 days. This means that your air conditioning system has had to perform under unprecedented conditions for an extended period of time.
While you may not be due for your bi-annual maintenance yet, it might be a good idea to check and replace your ventilation system’s air filters early if they appear clogged or dirty. At just a couple of dollars for a new air filter, this one small step could help save you hundreds of dollars in repairs, as well as a lot of stress and grief.
Why would you want to do this? Glad you asked.
First of all, when the temperature outside increases, the AC has to work longer and harder to keep the home’s interior cool. This increases the demands placed on the compressor, coils, fan motor, etc., which increases the potential for damage.
Secondly, when the temperature hits 90 degrees or more, humidity levels increase, which actually makes the air heavier, making the AC work that much harder. [According to Wikipedia, absolute humidity ranges from 0 grams of water per cubic meter in dry air to 30 grams per cubic meter when the vapor is saturated at 90 degrees.]
This thicker humid air can pick up and retain more dust, dirt and particulate matter, which can cause an air filter to get clogged more quickly than normal. In turn, a clogged air filter can cause the fan motor to work harder to move the air through the system, which can increase the wear and tear, and decrease the lifespan of the unit.
Will this happen to your AC if you don’t change the air filter? In most cases, probably not. But to quote Ben Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Which would you want more the next time the thermometer hits 90, a cool, comfortable home, or the $2.00 you would have spent on the new filter? The answer seems obvious to us.
