While the official start of summer is still a few weeks away, cultural, music, and other types of festivals are already in full swing in Indianapolis, Carmel, Greenwood, and surrounding communities. If you missed the Vintage Wine Festival at Military Park or the Asian Festival at Garfield Park last weekend, don’t worry; they’ll be back next year. In the mean time, let’s take a look at some of the exciting events in the upcoming weeks.
While not a full-blown “festival,” the Annual Christ Church Strawberry Festival, to be held this Thursday, June 9th, is a fun and tasty way to kick off the Summer, and support a worthwhile organization. The Strawberry Festival takes place at Monument Circle from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until the strawberries run out. Get a delicious Strawberry Shortcake (with or without Ice Cream), for just $6.00 or less. It’s the perfect way to kick off the Summer in Downtown Indy. For more details, visit www.cccindy.org.
This weekend is jam-packed with interesting events all over town. One of our favorite festivals each year, the Italian Street Festival, takes place on June 10th & 11th, at the corner of East St. and Stevens St. You can enjoy more than 25 different pastas, Italian meats, desserts and more at this delicious celebration of Italian culture. (We always bring home a couple of quarts of their amazing red sauce, or “Gravy”, some of the best we’ve ever had! It freezes very well.) There is also have a separate “carnival” area with rides, games, and traditional “fair” treats like funnel cakes and caramel apples. Admission is free, but unless you’re very lucky or come very early, plan on spending $5 – $10 for parking. Call (317) 636-4478 or visit www.italianheritage.org for more details.
On Saturday, June 11th, don’t miss the Independent Music + Art Festival from noon – 8 p.m. at the Harrison Center for the Arts. This annual event honors local musicians with live music performances, visual artists and more. For more information, log on to the Festival’s FaceBook page.
If you still have energy left, there’s the Talbot Street Art Fair on June 11th from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. & June 12 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. You will be able to browse and buy art from more than 270 artists around the United States. Enjoy live entertainment and food booths lining the historic street, all with free admission. Visit www.talbotstreet.org for more information, or call (317) 745-6479.
And let’s not forget the kids! Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park takes place on Saturday, June 11th at Military Park in White River State Park from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. WFYI Public Broadcasting’s 18th annual event is a fun-filled afternoon ideal for families looking to get out in the summer sunshine. The festival boasts live entertainment on three stages, hands-on educational activities and a selection of festival foods from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Kids will have a chance to meet some of their favorite PBS characters, including Arthur, Clifford, Curious George and special guests the Kratt Brothers.
